Firewall
Firewalls have really matured in the last ten years. Now instead of just being a packet filter, they offer a plethora of security features, as well as reporting capabilities. Features like virus scanning, Web filtering, VPN, authentication and now Layer 7 Inspection are part of most major firewalls today. These features give you more control, and provide a much deeper inspection into every packet. The firewall is becoming more intelligent about the traffic on your network. It is aware of the different applications, and even what could be potentially harmful to the application. It will allow port 80 (HTTP) outbound for Web traffic, but will monitor the content, and can block the traffic if it recognizes inappropriate content. In the same way it can monitor inbound traffic and recognize if the traffic pattern is normal or malicious.
Having your network infrastructure connected directly to the internet is just asking for trouble. Every piece of data is exposed, from your accounting data to detailed employee information. The firewall is the first step in network security. Placing firewalls along the perimeter of your network is the key to keeping out intruders. It keeps intruders form directly accessing your data by creating a barrier between your internal network infrastructure and the internet. The firewall becomes the translator and policeman all at the same time. The Cisco ASA 5550 series firewall is a cost effective way to provide the needed protection.
