Mobile & Remote Access Planning & Management
Mobile Access
When your organization needs access to the internal infrastructure from the outside, you may do it through Remote Access. However ,you may need Mobile Access first. Mobile Access is the ability to get access to the Internet from anywhere. You could be on a farm south of Fresno or at a McDonalds in downtown Sacramento and you can still get access to the Internet. Most outside sales staff, outside service staff and field staff use Mobile Access. There are various ways to get Mobile Access to the Internet.
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is one of the most popular types of access. There are many restaurants, hotels and public places that offer Wi-Fi. The most common access is the free Wi-Fi offered by many restaurants. The Wi-Fi is mostly a gimmick to get you to eat at the restaurant. It may be dangerous because it is unsecure and hackers may capture passwords. Starbuck and McDonalds offer a better, more secure Wi-Fi. However, you may have to pay for it and you can only use it at Starbucks or McDonalds. Starbuck’s uses AT&T and McDonalds uses Wayport. Hotel Wi-Fi is similar to Starbucks and McDonalds. Wi-Fi is usually tied to a business or a building and limits Mobile Access. For the sales person that is out on a farm south of Fresno it doesn’t work at all.
Mobile Phones or Mobile Access Cards
Most mobile phone companies offer a mobile phone or a mobile access card that allows you to get access to the internet. The speeds on these mobile devices vary, some are as fast as your organization’s internal internet access and some barely get you connected. The mobile access charge is added to your monthly mobile phone bill. The providers allow mobile internet access almost anywhere. If you get the mobile phone instead of the mobile access card there is even more flexibility. Most mobile phone companies offer a Mobile Phone that allows you to get email, schedule appointments and keep track of your tasks. These phones will sync with your Microsoft Outlook in real-time. Blackberry seems to be the most popular with businesses and mobile users. Aperio has signed an agreement with RIM to sell these popular mobile devices. We can now sell them for any of the three major mobile companies, Sprint, AT&T and Verizon.
