Media
There have been many types of long term data storage media that have been invented over the years, but the one type of media that has been the most reliable and is ever improving is tape media. Tape capacities have skyrocketed over the last few years as well as the speed. The durability continues to surpass any other type of media and is very portable. There are different formats of tapes and tape drive. The longest type is that DAT drive the capacity is on the lower end of the scale at 70 Gigabytes. This type of tape drive is good for small companies that may have just started. IBM has the VXA tape drive and the capacity is about 160 Gigabytes. The last and most popular tape drive is the LTO. The LTO tape drive can backup to 1.6 Terabytes. In the near future I think we will finally find that the tape backup system will be replaced by Solid State Cartridges. This is the same technology that has given us that Flash Drive or Flash Memory that get used in cameras and other small electronics gadgets.
